Lilly Library - Florence, Massachusetts
The
Lilly Library has been a distinctive Florence landmark and community
resource since 1890 and needed improvements to conform to current
standards for handicapped accessibility and meet public demand. The
old-fashioned library was originally built with 4,180 SF on two floors
with no elevator, no accessible bathrooms, and not enough space between
furniture and bookshelves.
D&A provided civil engineering services and worked closely with
Library Trustees and Caolo & Bieniek Associates (Architect) to
create a site design that accommodated the library’s growing
needs while also meeting the aesthetic goals. The bulk of the project
was the 6,400 SF addition that wraps around three sides of the original
building, nearly doubling its space. The entrances are now wheelchair
accessible and the second floor, formerly reachable only by stairs,
is available to people with disabilities via the elevator. The addition
included four handicapped-accessible restrooms downstairs, one specifically
for children and an additional restroom upstairs. The library also
has water on the second floor for the first time.
D&A created civil site drawings for permitting and bidding, and
prepared permit applications. The site work drawings included the
design of sewer, water system, grading and drainage systems including
an onsite stormwater mitigation system, parking lot layout, sidewalk
layout, landscaping, and site lighting. D&A worked closely with
the City of Northampton departments and officials on planning and
permitting as well as coordinating the efforts of various disciplines
for permit approvals and construction documents.
The $2.4 million renovation and expansion project had its re-opening
ceremony on September 5, 2006
