FaulknerUSA Awarded $65.6M Travis County Correctional Complex Expansion
03-07-2007

March 7, 2007 – Austin, Texas – After completing a lengthy public procurement process, the Travis County Commissioner’s Court awarded local development and design-build company FaulknerUSA a $65.6M contract to add 1,336 beds and related infrastructure to the existing correctional complex in Del Valle, Texas. The 265,000 square foot secure structure will be completed on a fast-track 18-month schedule. The project will commence on March 19, 2007.

The addition and alterations to the Travis County Correctional Complex will be the first design-build project undertaken by Travis County.  FaulknerUSA is recognized nationally for its corrections portfolio, and experience with the design-build method having successfully delivered more than 17,000 secure beds, including the award-winning Williamson County Jail and Garage (2003) in Texas and the Moshannon Valley Correctional Center (2006) in Pennsylvania.

The FaulknerUSA design-build team has a long and successful history of project delivery. The predominantly local FaulknerUSA team is made up of the following primary subcontractors: Durrant (architect); Hill Electric (electrical); Fox & Hearn (mechanical); K+CDA (construction administration); Doucet & Associates (civil engineer); Jaster-Quintanilla (structural engineer); and ISI/Metroplex (detention equipment).

As the highest ranked bidder at the conclusion of the procurement process, FaulknerUSA entered into negotiations with Travis County staff. During the negotiations, FaulknerUSA’s expertise with design-build and experience in value engineering resulted in additional savings to Travis County. The team was able to provide the County $200,000 in alternative approaches to delivery of certain components of the secure facility, evidence of FaulknerUSA’s commitment to this project.

“This is an important project for our company, and a critical one for Travis County,” said Ross Crews, Vice President of Construction Operations at FaulknerUSA. “I am very proud of what this team was able to accomplish during the procurement process through the conclusion of the contract negotiations with Travis County.”
