Kyle: The Hot Spot - Neighbor to the north making economic splash
San Marcos Daily Record – 09-27-2007

The Austin and San Antonio business journals have recognized the city of Kyle as the 2007-08 No. 1 "Hot Spot" in the Austin/San Antonio Corridor for commercial investment and development. The announcement was made recently at the Austin/San Antonio Growth Summit held in San Marcos. "In June, HEB opened one of its largest stores ever in Kyle, a testament to the area's potential," said Joseph R. Krier, president of the San Antonio Chamber of Commerce. "But the big business news for Kyle of late revolves around a new hospital Seton will build there and a 1-million square-foot retail center – tantamount to a regional mall – that is to go next door."  Kyle is currently the fifth fastest growing city in Texas, according the United States Census Bureau. The city's population in 2000 was just over 5,000. The Kyle City Council set the population at just over 25,000 in May of this year. Some estimates have the city rapidly closing in on the 30,000 population mark. "This is an exciting and important recognition, but it did not happen by accident," said Tom Mattis, Kyle city manager. "Through the effective and appropriate planning of both public infrastructure and overall land development, the city of Kyle has positioned itself to embrace every kind of development – and the Central Texas business community certainly now recognizes that."  Several new residential developments are in the works in Kyle, including at least one multi-family development. Currently platted development can accommodate a population of over 60,000 with room for more as the new developments come online. "Kyle, like many of our other hot spots, proved recently that it can play ball in the big leagues," said Krier. "Thanks in part to incentives offered by the city, a promising computer manufacturer in Austin called RSI is in the process of packing its things to move into a $3.5 million plant its building in Kyle." RSI ("Response-Service-Innovation") is currently located on Riverside Drive in East Austin and is on track to move its operation to Kyle in late 2007 or early 2008. The company is expected to bring up to 200 high tech jobs to Kyle.
